Edwin Toohey

Chairman of Horwich Urban District Council: 1958-59, 1965-66 (Labour)

Born: Wigan, Lancashire 29 January 1902

Died: The Fylde, Lancashire 1978

Came to Horwich in 1934.

He was a salesman for Hoover vacuum cleaners.

At the outbreak of the Second World War he was on the staff of the Control and Report Centre of the Council's Civil Defence organization.

In 1942 he volunteered for the RAF and served until 1945. He then started work at Horwich Loco Works as a Chargehand Chain Examiner.

In the 1950s he was a school manager and in 1965 worked as a railway clerk.

Chairman of Horwich Branch of National Union of Railwaymen and was an Executive Member of the NUR Manchester District Council.

Represented Central Ward 1953-68.

Chairman of the Allotments Committee, General Purposes Committee and of the Finance Committee.

Son in law of William Chipchase, Chairman of Horwich UDC 1927-28, having married Rosamund Jane Chipchase in 1947.

Retired to the Fylde with his wife in 1966 but stayed on to complete his term as Councillor in 1968.
