Alan Thomas Nowell

Chairman of Kearsley Urban District Council: 1968-69 (Liberal)

Born: Bolton 20 September 1921

Died: Salford 17 November 2003

On his election as Chairman in 1968 he said he would "strive for a cleaner and tidier place to live in." He said he would use his position to encourage the swift clearance of motorway eyesores in the town. Ultimate cleanliness could only be achieved with the co-operation of the public and he urged them to "get in touch with your Councillor if your street has not been swept for an unreasonable period – and make sure you find out why." He pleaded for the public's help in keeping parks and recreational areas tidy.

Councillor Eric Bridges referred to him as "the quiet man of the Council" adding "He is not noted for his speeches, but admired for his efforts in making Kearsley a cleaner place to live in."
