Elizabeth McCracken

Mayor of Horwich: 1979-80, 1988-89, 1992-93*, 1997-98 (Labour)

Born: c. 1917 Glasgow, Scotland

Died: Vale House, Horwich 15 February 2011

First female Mayor of Horwich.

On the fourth occasion that she became Mayor of Horwich in 1997 Councillor Peter McGeehan said, "It was an honour to propose such a distinguished and hard-serving member of Horwich Town Council. My family and countless other families have been indebted over the years for the work she has put in for them. She is well known for her work in housing and social problems in the area and we have a prime example in Betty McCracken of what service to the community is."

In 1997-8 her niece, Mrs Josie Aspinall, was Mayoress.

Awarded Horwich Civic Medal 2003.

(*1992-93 took over the duties of Ian Carruthers who became too ill to continue during his Mayoral year.)
