He worked first as a book-keeper for Andrew Knowles and Sons, Eagley.
Father of John Hayward, Chairman of Little Lever UDC 1912-14.
Grandfather of Richard Hayward, Chairman of Little Lever UDC 1937-38, 1946-47.
Appointed to Little Lever Local Board in 1873 and served 25 years in total.
Chairman of Streets and Finance Committees.
On his retirement, fellow Councillors contributed to place a portrait of him in the Council Chamber, inscribed "Richard Hayward, elected 1873, retired 1898, Chairman 1879-1881 and in 1896."
Wesleyan - One of the founders of the Church in Little Lever. Choirmaster of Wesleyan Chapel for 20 years and a Trustee. Manager of the Wesleyan Day School.
He later lived in Bromley Cross and worshipped at Birtenshaw Wesleyan Church. |
