Harry Barnes

Chairman of Little Lever Urban District Council: 1951-52, 1957-58 (Conservative)

Educated: St Matthew's School, Little Lever; Radcliffe Technical College

Born: Little Lever 4 January 1902

Died: Southport, Lancashire 28 March 1963

Foreman at Walker Allen and Sons, Hollybank Mills Radcliffe.

Oone of eight brothers of a well known local family but the only one to enter local government.

Represented Church Ward from 1948.

hairman of the Establishments Committee.

When Chairman in 1957 the Council was composed of 6 Conservative members and 6 Labour members and he had the casting vote.

Member of Little Lever Conservative Club.

FORMER RADIO BANDSMAN IS NEW COUNCIL CHAIRMAN (headline Farnworth Journal 24 May 1957)

He learned to play the cornet at 11 years old and joined Little Lever Temperance Band. Until 1955 he was an active, playing member of the Besses o'th' Barn Band and broadcast with them on many occasions. He was Bandmaster of the Excelsior Band, Radcliffe for 16 years and often played with Farnworth Old Band.

Anglican - he worshipped at St Matthew's Church.
