Harold Armitage

Mayor of Farnworth: 1953-54 (Labour)

Born: Huddersfield, Yorkshire 3 April 1892

Died: Farnworth 16 May 1955

Educated: Huddersfield Higher Grade School; St John's College York (BSc in Economics)

Schoolmaster.

He was a committed Socialist from the age of 14.

As a convinced Pacifist he became a conscientious objector during the First World War and was imprisoned before fleeing to Ireland - actions which were used against him when he stood as a candidate at the Council elections in 1945.

In 1928 he joined Farnworth Central School (now Harper Green) as Senior English Master. In 1938 he was appointed Head Teacher at Plodder Lane County Primary School where he stayed until his sudden death in 1955.

Councillor from 1945.

He had a long association with the WEA and served on Manchester University Joint Committee for Adult Education for more than 20 years.

He was also a close friend and political ally of George Tomlinson, Chairman of Farnworth UDC 1932-34 and MP for Farnworth 1938-52 - who had also been a conscientious objector during the First World War.
